WI members met at the Cumbria Museum of Military Life within the walls of Carlisle Castle to see the poppy tribute to the fallen. A two minute silence was observed. At 7.30 am, when the first men went “over the top”, a bugle sounded and a whistle was blown.
Many WI members have taken part in knitting and crocheting the poppies to make the memorial. Approximately 500 men from the Border Regiment were killed or injured on the first day – 1 July – and poppies will be added daily to the memorial for each man killed on that particular day. The Battle of the Somme ended on 18 November 1916.
