Our Federation is made up of the following Committees, read below to find out more.
Cumbria-Cumberland Federation Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is elected by WI members every 2 years and the Chairman is elected by the Trustees. They control the finances of Cumbria Cumberland Federation and consider the demands on expenditure made by the Committees and the Officers. All Board members have special responsibilities in the running of the Federation and are Trustees under Charity Law.
Education & Public Affairs
This Committee meets 5 times a year. History, health and beauty, photography and literature are just some of the subjects that this Committee cover through trips and workshops for members. Under Public Affairs this committee deals mainly with campaigns from National Federation which range over matters concerning the agricultural industry, conservation, health, public and international affairs.
Some of the events the Committee is organising for 2017 include a visit to Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, another of the popular days at Greenhill, Wigton, and a quizzical walk in Brampton.
The Home Crafts Committee meet 4 times a year. Recently the Committee have held beadwork and bookmaking classes, held a lunch and flower demonstration, provided refreshments at the Federation Carol Service and organised a trip to Beamish Museum. The Committee were also responsible for the creation of the very popular Federation Centenary Recipe Book. Events coming up include an afternoon tea and cracker making demonstration.
In 2017 we are planning a Kumihomo braiding workshop, a Craft Daffle Day with lunch, where you will be able to choose 2 out of 5 crafts to do on the day, and a visit to see the embroideries at York Minster.
A team of WI Advisers have responsibility to open new WIs and further the work of the WI in Cumbria. This is achieved by working with WIs, offering friendship, guidance and support as required. Training workshops are organised for WI Officers and Committee members from time to time. Encouraging women to become members and promoting the WI generally are important parts of their work.
Our remit is to introduce new members to our influential and wonderful organisation as well as inform and encourage existing members through workshops, visits and resolution meetings. We take up the challenge with enthusiasm.
If you are planning next year’s programme and would like a local speaker, your WI Advisor can come and entertain you with a short talk about the fun and friendship to be had as a member of the WI, ideas for your meetings, plus a question and answer session. There is no fee, just travel expenses to a max of £20. If you are interested then contact WI Office for further information.
Art & Leisure
Whether you wish to enjoy a show, learn to shoot or pit your wits with a quiz, life is never dull with this Committee, brimming with ideas and enthusiasm for anything from theatre trips, workshops and competitions to the organisation of the carol service. Sports events are held throughout the county, which enables members to participate in a wide range of activities, including target shooting, archery, darts competitions and rambles. The aim is to encourage active participation in activities, with something to suit most members during the year.
In 2017 we will be holding a games event, as well as more of our popular archery and target shooting sessions.
