Penrith WI member Wendy Walker has won the 2018 Lady Denman Cup competition for creative writing.
“The challenge was to write about ‘the day that changed my life’ in 500 words,” said Wendy. “I put together a memory of the day when I was 16 when I went for an interview for my first job, as a local newspaper reporter. I got the job, but I was far more interested in going to a dancing class that night and meeting a boy I was crazy about. The job worked out far better than the boy, as it happened.”
Wendy, now 75, moved to Penrith from Somerset five years ago. She says she was inspired to go back to academic work by the WI. It got her involved in research for the Women of Cumbria project, and she is now working on a study of the Norse occupation of Cumbria.
