Education & Public Affairs
This Committee meets 5 times a year. History, health, photography, literature and textiles are just some of the subjects that this Committee cover through trips and workshops for members. Under Public Affairs this committee deals with campaigns from National Federation, which range over matters concerning the agricultural industry, conservation, health, and public and international affairs.
Some of the events the Committee is organising for 2019 include another of the popular ACWW ‘Women Walk the World’ events, a ‘Quizzical Walk’, and a trip to the Helena Thompson Museum in Workington.
Home Crafts
The Home Crafts Committee meet 4 times a year. Recently the Committee have held Fabric Embroidery and Bead Bracelet workshops, a Starters and Puddings Night, and a trip to the Harrogate Flower Show.
In 2019 we are planning series of Patchwork/Quilting workshops, a visit to the Chocolate Shop and Boundary Mill at Colne, a trip to Southport Flower Show, and Pewter and Calligraphy workshops.

Membership Support
A team of WI Advisers have responsibility to open new WIs and further the work of the WI in Cumbria. This is achieved by working with WIs, offering friendship, guidance and support as required. Training workshops are organised for WI Officers and Committee members from time to time. Encouraging women to become members and promoting the WI generally are important parts of their work.
Our remit is to introduce new members to our influential and wonderful organisation as well as inform and encourage existing members through workshops, visits and resolution meetings. We take up the challenge with enthusiasm.
If you are planning next year’s programme and would like a local speaker, your WI Advisor can come and entertain you with a short talk about the fun and friendship to be had as a member of the WI, ideas for your meetings, plus a question and answer session. There is no fee, just travel expenses to a max of £20. If you are interested then contact WI Office for further information.
Art & Leisure
Whether you wish to enjoy a show, learn to shoot or pit your wits with a quiz, life is never dull with this Committee, brimming with ideas and enthusiasm for anything from theatre trips, workshops and competitions to the organisation of the carol service. Sports events are held throughout the county, which enables members to participate in a wide range of activities, including target shooting, archery, darts competitions and rambles. The aim is to encourage active participation in activities, with something to suit most members during the year.
In 2019 we are organising a trip to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle to see Matthew Bourne’s production of Swan Lake, and a ‘Let us entertain you’ evening at Bothel, where you can perform your party pieces!
